Jaimie's Senior Pictures

Here's a few pics of Jaimie taken at the park by a friend. Which one do you like?

Good News

Yes, we do have good news coming in and I wanted to share.

First - Jeffrey passed his internship exam! (only 50% pass the test on the first try.) This means he will be able to complete an internship this summer at a Nuclear Plant. Yay! He is doing well in school, back doing his Tae Kwon Do, working and studying, which leaves little time for getting into trouble - we hope!

Jaimie is doing well in public school. She likes her classes, stresses out about homework, and is thinking about college. I guess that makes her a typical 17 yo. She is going to Olathe South High School and is a Senior.

Jeff has an interview next week with a good company. We sure hope that goes well. He is 1 of 4 being interviewed for the job.

As for me - well I am doing some reading, studying, some organizing, and stuff that I've been wanting to do for such a long time. One of my projects is to scan all my Mom and Dad's keepsakes - scrapbooks, letters, articles, etc. It's very interesting to go back through their lives.

Happy Halloween!

October News

Well, it is October now, and the bad news is that Jeff received a rejection notice for the job at Johnson County Kansas Health. However, the Emergency Planner's job for Kansas City, Missouri has reopened. He applied for that position, and a few others, but we are still awaiting a response. The KCMO job would be a great one. Just not sure who we are up against for the job. It would be nice to get a call this week or next for an interview!

The weather is quickly turning chilly. We've had some rain and things are still very green, with the first signs of Autumn colors on the trees. It is very pretty right now.

I'm laid up because I sprained my ankle - yes it was due to falling down some stairs. No surprise there. Wish I had more news to tell, but we are still hangin' and hoping and praying.

Job Interview

Well, Jeff had a job interview today and it went pretty well. It was with our county health department - the job is Emergency Planner. He would do a lot of training and presentations, visit the hospitals, and lots of other stuff. He would really enjoy this. We won't know anything for about week.

Jeffrey came home for the 3 day weekend. It was very good to see him. School is going well, but he still needs to find a job. He's taking classes like Metallurgy, Introduction to Nuclear Engineering, Statistics, and stuff like that.

Jaimie is working hard at school. She is doing very well so far. She received her Patriarchal Blessing on Sunday and it was a beautiful and spiritual experience.

I am reading a book on doing things with information, just finished David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, and am researching jobs, houses, etc. I would like to become a certified genealogist, so I've been looking into those requirements. I think it would be fun to work at a genealogy library, and there is a brand new one in Independence that is a beautiful building and they have a wonderful collection.

I'M DONE!!!

I received word from Emporia State University that my degree has been conferred! Yay! I'm so happy to be done. I could never have done it without Jeff's support. He also finished, May 2009 and is job hunting now. It is a very competitive environment for jobs, but we hope to find good work soon.

We attended the LDS Employment Seminar for Professionals together and it was excellent. They teach you how to write a dynamic resume, interview and everything else to help you get a good job. Very soon, the church will be coming out with an employment website that will surpass Monster.com and other job search sites. They are putting their all into helping members and nonmembers find meaningful employment.

I am so glad that I went back to school for my Master's, even though it was very hard. I learned so much and am excited to find a way to put it to use.

Latest Good News

Wow, summer is winding down. Jeffrey took 2 classes this summer and got 2 A's! Jaimie played piano at M.A.M.A. and received a Superior rating! We are still jobless, but hope that will change soon. It is a lot of work to create resumes, find and network for jobs, and do interviews. In the meantime, we are all healthy and enjoying the summer.

Jeffrey's Homecoming

It was a great day when Jeffrey came home! So much fun...it was April Fool's day, so we all dressed up and waited for him to get off the plane. Wow, it was so good to see him after 2 years. He had lots of stories to tell and we loved having him home for a whole month before he headed for school.

Hugs and Kisses from Mom!

Mom and Dad are so happy he's home safe!

Graduation

It was so windy that I had to hold my hat. But it was a great feeling - yea, walking across the stage was really fun.

Kathy and Sadie

I finally got new glasses. What do you think?

Things are changing

It has been a long time since I've posted to my blog. That's because I was finishing school, Jeff was finishing school, and Jeffrey came home, then we had to move, and we both attended our graduation ceremonies, and I guess you could say it has been very busy.

We are living in Overland Park now with my brother John, while Jeff looks for a job, and I finish my classes. I still have my capstone and a project to finish. I should be all done by the end of July. Yay!!!!

Jeffrey is home and now at school in Rolla, Missouri, attending Missouri Science and Technology University.

Jaimie is preparing for M.A.M.A. (Mid-America Music Association). She will be playing 2 pieces in the competition. That's coming up the end of July.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to decide what I want to do with my degree. There are quite a few options. I'll keep my options open until I know where we are moving to - where ever Jeff gets a job in other words.

We'll keep you posted.

Paraguayan Culture

This is our group outside the CIRD building in Asuncion. CIRD stands for Centro de Informacion y Recursos para el Desarrollo. (Information Center and Resources for Development.) They are an organization funded by the U.S. to help development in Paraguay by providing information, surveys, resources, support, etc.
The most fun thing to do in Paraguay is to shop! The exchange rate is approx. 5,100 guarani to $1.00. You can buy all kinds of handmade items at great prices. Paraguay is known especially for its beautiful lacework, leather work, and silver. The indigenous (natives - Lamanite tribes) make beautiful jewelry out of seeds and weave purses and bags and make all sorts of other neat things. They sell their wares on the street and you can bargain with them for a good price. This the mall, which serves the upper class in Asuncion. Can you find the golden arches?
You definitely don't want to drink the water!
Here we are shopping in a little market in the mall. We were buying bottled water. Maria is pulling the little cart - the green basket had wheels on the bottom and you could pull it along with it's flip up handle. I thought it was cool enough to take a picture of it.
We had the most fun at the National University. Here the library students entertained us and they were amazing. They played the harps, guitar, and danced. Then the dancers grabbed a few of us from the audience to dance with them. I got to dance with a very cute Paraguayan guy, and he was impressed that I knew how to dance so well. (A plug for the great stuff I learned in Mutual as a teenager, and at dance classes at BYU). It was a blast!!!
The famous Bottle Dance!
What a trip! I enjoyed it soooo much. The people of Paraguay are very friendly and humble. The food was good too. Most of our time was spent touring libraries all over Asuncion and the Chaco, and learning about the information infrastructure of the country. They are dealing with many problems, but they have so many wonderful qualities as a people.

Strike!

These are old pictures, but I'm in a class where we are learning about Web 2.0 and how to use it in an educational setting or library. I am putting in a new entry for class. It is true, though, I must admit, that my family has "rediscovered" the game of bowling. Jeff, of course, is the best. He's a very good bowler, but hasn't done it in a while.
I use to bowl a lot when I was a kid, because my parents were on a bowling league and loved it. However, I'm not so good, and never really have been. But Jaimie had such a great time that she has gone back several times. We are lucky, because the bowling lanes at the University are only $1 on certain days, so they can go bowl for cheap. We've taken other kids with us and they've had fun too. I won't post their pictures because they might get mad at me, but bowling is the kind of sport that makes for some funny poses.

Salute to Librarians

I just gotta put in a plug for librarians! The first site is for the Carnegie award for the 10 best loved librarians in the nation. Carol Levers is one of the winners, and she is an Emporia State SLIM grad!! Hooray for Emporia State!

The next link is to Katie Couric's report on libraries! She quotes Laura Bush - "Libraries are a Community Treasure Chest". Check it out...

Happy New Year!

We have lots of things happening in 2009 that we are so excited for!

First, Jeff has started his last semester of school! Yeah! He is doing an internship for the Johnson County Missouri Emergency Operations Center and taking an online course to finish up. His work at the EOC will involve updating their Emergency Plan, attending meetings with the director, grant writing, and travelling about the state to meet other Emergency Managers. We hope and pray that this will lead to a real job! We started this back-to-school adventure 5 years ago - and are excited to see it almost finished - with Jeff having earned a Bachelor's Degree in Crisis and Disaster Management and a Master's Degree in Crisis Sociology. Now we are wondering - where to next? We'll let you know when we find out!!!

As for me, Kathy, I continue to work on my Master's Degree in Library and Information Management. If all goes well, I will be done by the end of Summer 2009. Present plans are for Jeff and I to both participate in our graduation ceremonies this Spring. Jeff's will be May 8th in Warrensburg and mine will be May 16th in Emporia, Kansas. My work this semester includes helping build a website for the EOC where Jeff is interning, indexing their EOC plan, and doing whatever other projects they would like. One opportunity there is to preserve their old maps and records. They are housed in a building which once was part of the Underground Railroad and they have many historic items of interest that need to be identified and stored properly, including a hall in the building hidden under the street where the slaves would stay till they could move on. I will take pictures and post the information I find as the project gets underway.

As for Jaimie, she is taking piano lessons this semester from a grad student at UCM. She's also finishing up swim team. She has two more meets and will be done in February. Her other studies will continue as well. Jaimie is a Junior this year and just got her driver's permit. Besides Geometry, English, Chemistry and Modern History she is taking classes at our Homeschool Coop. Those include Personal Finance, Portrait Drawing, Yearbook committee and Drama. This year Jaimie has the lead in the play. It's called "Virgil's Wedding" and is a comedy about a hick wedding. Jaimie plays the snobby wedding planner from the big city. It's a hoot!

The best news of all is that Jeffrey returns home from his 2 year mission to Romania in April. We are looking forward to having him home again, and pray for his continued safety and success. On Christmas day we spoke with him for an hour and he sounded great. His Romanian is very good, he says. Although, the grammar is still very difficult. He says you can always spot a non-native when they speak because of the grammar. He is back in Bucharest - the big city of over 2 million people. Please keep him in your prayers as he finishes up his work there.

Well, that's our summary. 2009 promises to be a busy year for us - with many changes in our lives. We hope that yours is happy and full of promise as well.

Love,
Jeff, Kathy, Jaimie and Elder Divis
