Happy New Year!
We have lots of things happening in 2009 that we are so excited for!
First, Jeff has started his last semester of school! Yeah! He is doing an internship for the Johnson County Missouri Emergency Operations Center and taking an online course to finish up. His work at the EOC will involve updating their Emergency Plan, attending meetings with the director, grant writing, and travelling about the state to meet other Emergency Managers. We hope and pray that this will lead to a real job! We started this back-to-school adventure 5 years ago - and are excited to see it almost finished - with Jeff having earned a Bachelor's Degree in Crisis and Disaster Management and a Master's Degree in Crisis Sociology. Now we are wondering - where to next? We'll let you know when we find out!!!
As for me, Kathy, I continue to work on my Master's Degree in Library and Information Management. If all goes well, I will be done by the end of Summer 2009. Present plans are for Jeff and I to both participate in our graduation ceremonies this Spring. Jeff's will be May 8th in Warrensburg and mine will be May 16th in Emporia, Kansas. My work this semester includes helping build a website for the EOC where Jeff is interning, indexing their EOC plan, and doing whatever other projects they would like. One opportunity there is to preserve their old maps and records. They are housed in a building which once was part of the Underground Railroad and they have many historic items of interest that need to be identified and stored properly, including a hall in the building hidden under the street where the slaves would stay till they could move on. I will take pictures and post the information I find as the project gets underway.
As for Jaimie, she is taking piano lessons this semester from a grad student at UCM. She's also finishing up swim team. She has two more meets and will be done in February. Her other studies will continue as well. Jaimie is a Junior this year and just got her driver's permit. Besides Geometry, English, Chemistry and Modern History she is taking classes at our Homeschool Coop. Those include Personal Finance, Portrait Drawing, Yearbook committee and Drama. This year Jaimie has the lead in the play. It's called "Virgil's Wedding" and is a comedy about a hick wedding. Jaimie plays the snobby wedding planner from the big city. It's a hoot!
The best news of all is that Jeffrey returns home from his 2 year mission to Romania in April. We are looking forward to having him home again, and pray for his continued safety and success. On Christmas day we spoke with him for an hour and he sounded great. His Romanian is very good, he says. Although, the grammar is still very difficult. He says you can always spot a non-native when they speak because of the grammar. He is back in Bucharest - the big city of over 2 million people. Please keep him in your prayers as he finishes up his work there.
Well, that's our summary. 2009 promises to be a busy year for us - with many changes in our lives. We hope that yours is happy and full of promise as well.
